Chairman's Message
WINTER OLYMPICS SPIN-OFF
There is no doubt that sporting and leisure pastimes have their appeal but the 2006 Winter Olympics has awakened within us the urge to join in. The pure brilliance of the Olympians has instilled a worldwide enthusiasm in the young (and old) to take part – to become involved in the activities that were so wonderfully displayed in the competitions.
As a business with a strong reputation for our winter sports facilities we have seen the upsurge through the huge increases in attendances for ice-skating, skiing and snowboarding. This increase is reported across the country from the many ice rinks and artificial ski and snowboarding centres.
The sheer beauty and quality of the ice skating performances is greatly reflected by the number of enquiries and bookings for ice skating lessons at both our Bristol and Bracknell ice rinks. This is equally so for the skiing and snowboarding lessons at our dry ski slopes in Bracknell, Chatham, Llandudno, Plymouth and Swadlincote. Due to the enthralling and inspiring snowboarding and ice skating of the Olympians, our leisure facilities are buzzing.
The Bracknell Ski Centre is already preparing a snow-park for the boarders and this will open to the public later this year. It is with great interest our other ski centre managers are watching the preparation works as there are plans to provide similar boarding areas at the other slopes as soon as practicable. With snowboarding becoming a main attraction for the youth it is essential that a provision is made for the increasing activity within the sport.
Of course, our product Perma-snow™, the unique safer surface manufactured by our subsidiary company Techmat 2000 is just right for this project. The surface can flex to almost any shape whilst retaining its skiing qualities. This makes it ideal for boarders and skiers alike and the cushioning of the carpet surface eases any hurt from falling resulting in fewer bumps and bruises. Perma-snow™ is just right for beginners, intermediates and experts alike whilst the very young have great confidence in using the surface for both skiing and tobogganing.
With Easter approaching, you need look no further for the kids’ holiday fun than the John Nike Leisuresport Centres that will be hosting activities including ski and snowboard camps, ice skating courses and Easter egg hunts. It is time to book now for these popular junior camps as the places are soon taken up.
Not only is obesity pushed to one side through energetic participation but boredom is also overcome when taking part in the leisure and sporting activities offered by John Nike Leisuresport. It is not only fun but also educational, healthy, exhilarating and exciting. Kids enthusiastically want to talk about their visits to our centres and the joy they experienced whilst there so, if your children have not been to one of our holiday camps, why not book now?
With personal health being a main topic on television at this time, I am pleased to announce that the refurbishment of the health suite at The Swan at Streatley hotel has now been completed. The club has been renamed the Venus Spa and provides a state of the art workout gym as well as a spa bathing pool, steam room, sauna and Jacuzzi in the luxurious roman-themed surroundings. There are also two top class treatment rooms in which to pamper the ladies…and plans are in preparation for a 13m swimming pool to complement the health facilities.
Still on the subject of health, the Waves leisure club at the Coppid Beech Hotel has recently separated the strength and cardio equipment. This provides an entirely separate room for the strength buffs and giving more room for the members using the cardio equipment. A new Schwinn cycling studio has also been added to improve members’ cardiovascular health through spinning classes. Enquiries are welcome.
Perhaps this is the spot to say that I am running in the London Marathon this year for the British Red Cross and, as are many others, I am seeking sponsorship for this worthy charity. If you would like to sponsor my run, details can be found under www.justgiving.co.uk. Any donations are welcome.
Also, on the 15th September 2006, the British Red Cross – Berkshire Branch will be holding a charity clay pigeon shoot at the Royal Berkshire Shooting School in Pangbourne to raise funds for the purchase of a Berkshire FES vehicle (see picture). Any companies or individuals interested in taking part in this team event can obtain the details from Annie Burton on 0118 929 0500 or by email on berks@redcross.org.uk or by contacting my office on 01344 789555.
Inside this copy you will find many articles to interest you and, with the best of the spring season to come, our stone stockholding at Jubilee Building Supplies may be just what you are looking for to hard landscape a part of your garden. Or, maybe, you are thinking of replacing the front garden with paviors for parking that extra car. Why not visit Jubilee Building Supplies on John Nike Way to order your materials for any garden DIY you may be planning. And, while you are visiting, it will be an ideal opportunity to visit the adjacent Octagon Toyota and Lexus showrooms to consider that extra car!
Whatever you have planned for the spring, do enjoy the season and the Easter break.

Daily Mail Ski Show feedback
Once again John Nike Leisuresport was one of the top attractions at the annual Daily Mail Ski and Snowboard Show, held at London's Olympia last October.
Free ski and snowboard lessons and sno-tubing sessions on the 400 square metre mobile PERMA-SNOWTM slope proved a huge hit - with well over 500 people hitting the slope throughout the five-day show.
And at the next-door hospitality stand, staff were run off their feet at they took record numbers of bookings for lessons at centres across the country. All those who booked at the show received a 25 per cent discount.
For the first three days of the show, lunchtimes on the mobile slope were devoted exclusively to school parties, with 238 children enjoying the excitement of a session across the three days.
'It was by far our most successful appearance at the show and ours was easily the most interactive and exciting stand,' explained Lesley French, Ski Show Co-ordinator, John Nike Leisuresport. 'Both staff - who worked exceptionally hard - and everyone who visited us had a fantastic time.'
The names of those who had a free lesson were entered into a prize draw competition to win a selection of fabulous goodies that included a pair of skis, snowblades and a snowboard. The lucky winners were drawn by John Nike OBE DL, who presented the prizes at a glittering event at the Coppid Beech Hotel, Bracknell, in November.
Newly-weds Mr and Mrs Morgan from Oxfordshire won the top prize - a ski break weekend for two at the Coppid Beech Hotel. 'The timing was perfect as they were just about to jet off skiing for their honeymoon!' said Lesley.
Story (B) Review of festive season at JNLLs
Christmas 2005 was celebrated in style at all the John Nike Leisuresport centres. Across England and Wales, staff excelled themselves to create a fantastic festive period, with real community spirit. And a certain jolly fellow in a red suit was very busy indeed!
At John Nike Leisuresport Centre, Bracknell, Christmas got off to a cracking start when the team delighted shoppers in the town centre with demonstrations on the site's mobile ski slope and characters from their pantomine production, Aladdin. The team also took the ski slope 'on tour' by visiting local schools' winter fairs to help attract more visitors, boosting their fundraising efforts.
And back at the centre things were looking busy! 'All our ski camps were fully booked up - it was definitely one of our busiest Christmases ever,' explained Dan Gomm, Centre Manager.
At Llandudno Ski and Snowboard centre Father Christmas put in a special visit to hand out cards and presents to all the good girls and boys, as visitors sung carols around the tree. And after working-up an appetite on the slopes, record numbers of hungry skiers and boarders enjoyed the centre's Christmas fondue and hot chocolate evenings.
At Bristol Ice Rink, the doors remained open and the welcome warm - even on Christmas Day. 'It was great to see so many people here, burning off their Christmas dinners with a skate,' said Lynn England, Rink Manager. 'The atmosphere was brilliant.'
Despite it being his busiest time of the year, Father Christmas also had time to make a guest appearance at Swadlincote Ski and Snowboard centre. Joined by John Nike Leisuresport mascot Polo the Polar Bear, Santa skied down the torchlit slope before meeting local children. As for Polo, he made front-page news by helping to switch on the town's Christmas lights.
Hundreds of guests also attended Swadlincote's legendary 'Oompah' evenings, enjoying toboggan runs, a three-course dinner and a good old knees-up!
And at Chatham and Plymouth, celebration was in the air. Local businesses flocked to Chatham to enjoy their Christmas parties with a difference, enjoying toboggan rides and festive fondues before hitting the dancefloor.
---------------
Arabian nights came to life at Bracknell as the team put on its Christmas pantomime extravaganza - Aladdin.
A cast of over 100 skaters took to the ice to tell the story of the poverty-stricken boy, who finds fame, fortune and true love after the genie in the lamp grants his three wishes. And behind the scenes, a vast team of volunteers from John Nike Leisuresport, Bracknell, helped with the lighting, props, costumes and rigging.
'We started planning Aladdin back in March 2005 and wanted to create something sensational,' said Ben Eltham, trainee manager and Producer and Director of the show. 'And, together we did it! Everyone I've spoken to says it's been the best panto we've ever put on - and I'd like to say a huge thank you to all those who worked so hard to make it such a success.'
With ticket sales reaching over £25,000, the show was a smash hit, especially with kids. Over 1,000 local children attended the special schools performance. 'It was incredibly noisy,' said Ben, 'and there were times when all you could hear were the screams of 'he's behind you!' But the atmosphere was just wonderful.'
After eight performances, the tired team enjoyed a fantastic party to celebrate their achievement. Celebrating with them was John Nike OBE DL, who took the opportunity to present a cheque for £xxxx to the British Red Cross and a further donation of £xxxx to the Bracknell Ice Skating Club.
Website update
Regular visitors to the Coppid Beech Hotel's website ( HYPERLINK http://www.coppidbeech.com www.coppidbeech.com) will have noticed that the site has been completely revised, with a fresh new look that's both elegant and contemporary.
The improvement heralds a new era for the Nike Group hotels' internet presence, with a completely rewritten and designed website for The Swan at Streatley due to be launched shortly.
'We've included as much information we could on the new site,' said Leslie Owensby, the Nike Group's web designer. 'As well as details about accommodation and facilities, visitors to the site have access to in-depth, up-to-date information about the hotel's conference spaces, wedding packages, eating and drinking options, leisure breaks and special offers. There's even an area where people can download brochures.'
The new site has a polished, tasteful design that reflects the hotel's four-star status. Fresh photographs and eye-catching illustrations have been included to help visitors appreciate the Coppid Beech Hotel's special visual charm.
'I'm very pleased with the result,' said Leslie. 'What's really great is that despite putting so much information on the site, navigation couldn't be simpler. The whole site has been designed to ensure visitors can find the details they need quickly and easily.'
Are you ready? Campaign
The John Nike Leisuresport Centres' 'Are You Ready?' campaign has enjoyed its second successful year - preparing hundreds of skiers and boarders across the country to hit the slopes safely on their winter holidays.
'It's been a huge success with our customers and we've enjoyed record sales. The message that people need to be fully prepared and up to speed with their skiing or boarding skills before going away is definitely getting through,' explained Nigel Treacy, Centre Manager at Llandudno.
'To really help our guests get the most out of the initiative, we've even put together a special 'Are You Ready?' gift pack which people can buy as a present for others or treat themselves to. It contains a voucher for a three week course of lessons, a disposable camera, a certificate of achievement, ski level card and brochure,' he continued.
Staff at Swadlincote have also had their efforts to promote the campaign rewarded, as Mark Morley, Centre Manager, explains: 'To create a buzz, we publicised the campaign with newspaper and radio adverts and it paid off magnificently. Bookings for adult group and one-to-one lessons are doing especially well.'
Competition
Summer - we all love it, but it's hardly the most relaxing time of year! The prize includes use of the spa, an Elemis aromatherapy massage, three course dinner and one night's accommodation.

Easter at JNLLs
Spring is in the air! And if you're wondering how to entertain your 'little bunnies' this Easter, look no further than your local John Nike Leisuresport centre. The teams across the county are planning an egg-stravaganza of egg-citing activities to keep the whole family entertained.
Llandudno is looking forward to becoming the focal point for the town's Easter celebrations. There will be a full programme of activity sessions and all the children in the local community will be invited along to meet a very special guest: the Easter bunny! 'Every child deserves a treat at Easter,' said Nigel Treacy, Centre Manager. 'And the Easter bunny is always very happy to oblige!'
Over in Chatham, the focus is firmly on encouraging children to learn those essential snowboarding and skiing skills at the centre's Easter holiday activity camps. 'The children learn so much at these sessions,' said Andy Rushton, Manager. 'Seeing their progress is incredibly rewarding and both the kids and the instructors have loads of fun. The slope has recently been covered in PERMA-SNOWTM, which means softer landings and fewer bruises!'
And if learning to skate is your child's ambition this Easter then head to Bracknell, where budding Torvill and Deans can learn the basics in a safe and enjoyable atmosphere.
Our furry friend, the Easter bunny, is popping out of his warren to say a big hello to kids in Swadlincote. 'He's being a bit cheeky this year,' said Mark Morley, Centre Manager. 'Instead of just handing out Easter eggs, he's going to hide them around the centre and invite all the children to find them at a fantastic Easter egg hunt!'
And that's not all - the centre will again be running its hugely popular daily junior ski and snowboard camps.
There's only one place for children in Plymouth to be between 10.30am and 3pm during the Easter holidays - the ski and snowboard activity camps at the town's John Nike Leisuresport centre! Now boasting a PERMA-SNOWTM-surfaced nursery slope, the team is expecting a very busy couple of weeks.
And don't forget Bracknell! The centre is hosting a fantastic range of events and training camps this Easter, including tots' ski camps, junior one-and-two-day ski camps and snowboard camps. 'Our children's activity camps are always hugely popular - places should definitely be booked early to avoid disappointment,' advises Dan Gomm, Centre Manager.

Nike construction
Nike Construction has finished work on the last phase of the impressive Phoenix Business Park on John Nike Way, Bracknell.
'Building the third and final phase of the Phoenix Business Park, which is home to Lexus Bracknell's new showroom, was certainly no mean feat,' explained Alan Vowler, Manager, Nike Construction. 'It's a 17,610 sq ft building with a high-tech interior, three floors of office space, an ultra-modern showroom and a stylish circular 'drum' entrance.'
John Nike OBE DL attended the showroom's grand opening ceremony, held in early March, along with Lexus GB's Managing Director, Graham Smith and Director, Steve Settle.
Another launch not to be missed was the unveiling of The Swan at Streatley's luxurious, Romanesque Venus Spa in March, which Nike Construction also built. Se page XX for the full story.
Open days for teachers at JNLLs
Teachers across the country have been enjoying a taste of what's on offer at their local John Nike Leisuresport Centre after a series of special open days were arranged, in association with ski tour giants Interski.
'Getting teachers on board is a key step in attracting more children - and their families - to the slope,' said Mark Morley, Manager at Swadlincote. 'We welcomed 35 teachers to our open day, which was an amazing number - and they all really enjoyed having the opportunity to look at our facilities and ask questions.'
At Bracknell, bookings for group lessons from schools have rocketed after 32 local teachers took up the invitation to attend an open day. 'It's a great way of getting close to a important market for us,' explained Dan Gomm, Centre Manager. 'We're developing some fantastic relationships in our local community and the results, in terms of extra sales, have been brilliant.'
And it's not just schools that have been flocking to the slopes! Both Thames Valley University and Reading University Ski and Snowboard Clubs have chosen to use Bracknell John Nike Leisuresport centre as their regular practice site.

Ski and snowboard sales
The 2006 Winter Olympics, held in the Italian Alps, inspired many people to head for the snow themselves this year. Leisuresport World experienced an increased demand for gear at its ski and snowboard sales, as enthusiasts kitted themselves out before heading off to have their own adventures.
'We had our busiest ever sales this season,' said Alan Connor, Leisuresport World. 'The Olympics definitely captured the public's imagination and more people than ever seemed to be planning a trip to the mountains.'
The next Leisuresport World sale will be taking place between 10am - 5pm on Saturday 25 March and 10am - 4pm on Sunday 26 March at the Coppid Beech Hotel, Bracknell,
CARE Events at CBH
Christmas is the season of goodwill and with this in mind the Coppid Beech Hotel treated 250 local pensioners to some festivities at its 10th CARE (Community Action for the Retired Elderly) Day.
The day, which is designed to teach pensioners how to keep themselves safer in their homes, is run in association with Age Concern and Thames Valley Police and included a traditional three-course Christmas dinner, entertainment and all sorts of good old-fashioned fun.
Councillor Jacqui Ryder, Mayor of Bracknell Forest Borough Council, and John Nike, OBE, DL, Chairman of the Nike Group of Companies, addressed visitors and the Thames Valley Police talked about crime prevention and the dangers of bogus callers.
Guests enjoyed a sing-along as traditional music hall entertainer Dottie Wayne performed a selection of wartime songs and the choir from Oaklands Junior School in Crowthorne sang Christmas carols.
The fun didn't stop there though because as well as a fantastic prize draw, guests got the chance to take part in some great bingo games courtesy of Gala Bingo in Wokingham.
Alan Blenkinsopp, Hotel Operations Director, commented: 'The CARE event is always a great success which is why we continue to hold it year after year. As a successful local business it is also important to give something back to the community - a role that the hotel takes very seriously.
'It's an event that both our staff and guests thoroughly enjoy, but more importantly it has a serious message which I think does get home.'

British Food Fortnight
The Swan at Streatley and the Coppid Beech Hotel hit the headlines when they rolled out the culinary red carpet to celebrate British Food Fortnight, the nationwide event designed to promote local produce and traditional dishes.
To mark the occasion, both hotels’ two AA-rosette restaurants produced special menus to showcase the very best national produce. Cygnetures, at The Swan, served up a gourmet feast featuring Dorset crab, Oxford chicken and local wood pigeon, while over at the Coppid Beech, Rowans restaurant delighted its customers with a fantastic menu that included Berkshire faggots, local gammon and traditional Bakewell Tart.
British beer tastings took place in The Keller and local cheese producer Two Hoots Farmhouse Cheeses, based near Wokingham, was invited to talk to guests the Coppid Beech Hotel about how its award-winning range is produced.
All this activity grabbed the headlines in several local newspapers, with Karl Bentley, General Manager at The Swan, playing host while a journalist from the Reading Evening Post enjoyed afternoon tea.
And not only was Alan Blenkinsopp, Hotel Operations Director at the Coppid Beech, invited along as a guest on Nicki Whiteman’s BBC Radio Berkshire show, Head Chef Paul Zolik also joined 2-Ten FM DJ Ollie Hayes to cook a full English breakfast, on-air, for the breakfast crew!
“British Food Fortnight was a huge success for everyone involved, and our plans for this year’s event are looking even more exciting!” commented Alan.
Diageo case study
“We need a room that’s big enough to hold 80 delegates. And a Formula 1 racing car.” This was the unique challenge posed by international drinks business Diageo, when planning its recent conference at the Coppid Beech Hotel in Bracknell.
Diageo – which owns brands like Johnnie Walker, Smirnoff, Guinness and Baileys – chose the four-star hotel for its flexible facilities, and proximity to Heathrow airport and London.
As a major sponsor of the McLaren Mercedes F1 team, it also needed a venue capable of accommodating the genuine F1 car it wanted to display. “To the employees at the Coppid Beech, it wasn’t a problem – they just made it happen!” said Mark Baird, Diageo’s Facilities Manager, Scotland.
Luckily the hotel’s large Sequoia Suite allows vehicle access. Even so, the car was so wide staff had to tip it onto one side and gently push it through the entrance! The hotel also arranged posts and ropes to surround the car, and a security guard to keep 24-hour watch.
On the evening before the conference, Diageo used Après, the hotel’s own nightclub, for drinks, and delegates enjoyed a sumptuous private dinner in the Sequoia Suite. The conference itself also took place in the Sequoia, which accommodates up to 350 delegates. Breakout sessions were held in the Pine Suite next door, which can be divided into up to six rooms, and lunch was taken in The Keller, the hotel’s informal brasserie.
According to Mark, the hotel staff were true stars. “Nothing was too much trouble – their unflinching flexibility, general willingness and fantastic ‘can do’ attitude made our day a success,” he said.
Maxine Hoskins, the Coppid Beech’s Meetings and Events Manager, said: “Our approach is to do whatever it takes to deliver exactly what our clients want, with the minimum of fuss. That, coupled with our great facilities, is what makes the Coppid Beech Hotel so distinctive.”

Nike Design nursery extension
Nike Design (Wales) has been contracted to work on an innovative extension project at a primary school in Bridgend, South Wales.
“The extension involves the design of a nursery classroom and play area,” explained Chris Skilton, Chief Executive. “The additional classroom is straightforward enough; the school wanted to build a nursery to increase its range of facilities.
“However, we were also tasked with creating an outside play area for the children that could be shut off from unwelcome visitors at night. The key was to design something that was safe and secure but at the same time fun and appealing to the kids. So we decided to cover the area with a colourful and attractive canopy that had roller shutters which could be lowered at night to act as a security device.”
The extension, which was given the go-ahead by the Welsh Assembly late last year, is due to be completed by April this year.

Graduate recruits
Say hello to the new management team at the John Nike Leisuresport Centre in Swadlincote: Mark Morley (Manager) and Lesley French (Assistant Manager) who both joined the company as graduate recruits.
Sue Coffey, HR Manager, had this to say about the successful pair: 'Since joining the company in February 2000 Mark has learnt a great deal. He knows the business at Swadlincote inside out and I'm sure he'll make a strong manager that will help the centre to grow.'
'Lesley may have only just completed the two-year graduate scheme but we immediately promoted her to Assistant Manager because she is one of the best graduate we've ever recruited. She's has a very warm and friendly manner and is a real all-rounder - she'll certainly go far.'
Hoping to follow Mark and Lesley's success are two new graduate recruits, Gavin Stanton and Thomas Chaston. Gavin started the 2-year Leisuresport graduate scheme in August 2005 and is currently placed at the Chatham centre. He studied geography at the University of Wales and has a real passion for skiing. Thomas studied Business Management and Tourism Management at the University of Gloucester and is completing the Nike Group's hotel graduate programme at the Coppid Beech Hotel in Bracknell.

Techmat gets new glueing machine
PERMA-SNOW™, the revolutionary surface from Techmat 2000, is causing a stir in the dry ski slope industry with enquiries from both UK and international corporations coming in thick and fast.
“The level of interest we have received has been incredible,” explained Tony Ward, Manager. “To meet this high demand it has become necessary for us to invest in expansion. In this, the initial growth stage, we have purchased a quality glueing machine making the production process quicker and one step closer to semi-automation.”
Marketed as the ‘safer surface’, because of its cushioned underlay that enables skiers and snowboarders to avoid the cuts and grazes they may suffer on traditional diamond-shaped brush matting, PERMA-SNOW™ is ideal for novices and those lacking confidence. The surface is also a favourite with advanced users because its malleable properties mean it can be laid on any contour, including ramps and jumps.
Guests at John Nike Leisuresport in Bracknell and Swadlincote can enjoy the PERMA-SNOW™ experience on the centres’ main slope.

Lightfoots
A computerised MOT system has been introduced to vehicle testing stations across Great Britain, including Lightfoots petrol station in Crowthorne.
'The new system has been introduced to improve the consistency and standard of testing and to eliminate certificate theft and fraud, giving motorists more protection,' explained Greg Walsh, a manager of Lightfoots.
As well as holding test results the new centralised database, which is maintained and monitored by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), will contain vehicle information and details of authorised examiners and testers.
Greg continued: 'The system has already been rolled out to more than half of all testing stations in Great Britain. Our staff at Lightfoots have received training from a DVLA instructor on how to use the new database, and the system is now up-and-running at the site.'
Thanks to the new system you can now check the MOT status of a vehicle online by visiting www.motinfo.gov.uk, which is good news for people needing to validate this information; before buying a second-hand car, for instance.
The system also sees an end to all hand-written MOT test certificates; customers will instead be issued with computer-printed certificates. Along with the new-style MOT certificates motorists will be given an information leaflet: ' Your new MOT certificate and buying road tax online', which explains these changes and the benefits of the new system.

The explosion at Buncefield oil depot last December had a significant effect on motorists in the south of England as disruption to supplies and a seasonal peak in sales left numerous pumps dry. Lightfoots garages in Bracknell and Crowthorne suffered a brief fuel shortage, like many stations across the country.
'It was a difficult time, especially being so close to Christmas, many people were travelling long distances to visit family and friends and wanted to fill up before they left,' Greg Walsh, Manager, told Connections. 'Our job was to reassure people that there was enough petrol to go round.'
