Spring heralds a fresh look at business

The glory of Spring is showing in our gardens and the countryside with the early plants blooming and others budding and bursting from the ground. This refreshed life with its colours and new foliage is just what is needed to overcome the gloom brought about by the present worldwide human and economic problems.

A fresh start; a fresh look; a chance to rekindle our Group trading for the 2003/2004 financial year.

During my Management Dinner speech, I expressed my concerns about the affect of the present world unrest on our trading results and said: Good management will seek to adjust for turnover reductions by scrutinising the overhead costs and ensuring that any unnecessary expenditure is cut away and other expenditure is controlled.”

The message to all senior management was one of thrift. With this approach the Group will produce positive trading levels for the 2003/2004 financial year and be prepared for any economic downturn.

Apart from the opportunity for me to get serious messages across, the annual Management Dinner is also my opportunity to express my thanks, welcome new management employees and to award long serving employees. I was delighted to present the 10-year awards and gold pins to nine members of staff on this occasion. The recipients were Carol Courtenay (see photo), Jane McDougall, Eileen Knight, Maria Shaw,Alan Blenkinsopp, Dave Underwood, Gary Montgomery, Dean Armstrong and Eric Clark. Five-year pins were presented to David Lamb and Harry King.

I was also able to tell the Directors, Managers and guests of the Group’s future plans and direction. Continued on page 4 >>

Swan battles against the tide

January was a wash out for The Swan at Streatley - quite literally. The Thames burst its banks at the riverside hotel, flooding not only its 25 acres of garden but also Cygnetures restaurant, the Cygnet bar and the lounge.

Staff were determined that customers would not suffer, however, and immediately went about setting up a restaurant and bar in the hotel’s function room to enable business as usual.

Alan Blenkinsopp, Hotel Operations Director, said: "The staff did a fantastic job, working around the clock to ensure that the impact of the flood damage was kept to a minimum."

As Connections went to press, the water levels had subsided and The Swan at Streatley was fully operational and in tip-top condition for the busy spring and summer seasons.

Jubilee Building Supplies offers a wide range of products at prices that compete with major high street DIY retailers.

The company, based at John Nike Way, Bracknell, caters for all types of customers from the DIY enthusiast to the medium sized building company Peter White, Manager, said: "We are an independent builders’ merchant that aims to offer a fast, professional service at competitive prices."

So, why not pay the friendly staff at Jubilee a visit and see what they can do for you?

Time to tee-off

The golf driving range in Amen Corner, Bracknell, is well under way and is expected to ‘tee-off’ in late spring/early summer.

Nike Construction has completed the erection of the 16 covered driving bays and is now preparing for the specialised fencing to the site. The site drainage equipment was due to move onto the site as soon as the ground water level had dropped enough for work to start. Planting, seeding and other site preparation will then take place.

The specialised equipment will be put in place prior to the opening - the date of which will be announced soon.
