Bees' move boosts support |
|
Bracknell
Bees Ice Hockey Clubs switch to a different league
has been heralded as a major boost for fans and home-grown
playing talent.
John Nike OBE, the Bees owner, announced the
team will withdraw from the Ice Hockey Superleague (ISL)
at the end of the current season
in April to move to the Findus British National League
(FBNL) for the 2003-4 campaign. The ISL has no restrictions
on the number of
foreign players a team can field, while the FBNL imposes
a 50 per cent cap. Currently, 16 of the 17 Bees first
team squad players are
non-British. Club officials have welcomed
the move as a golden opportunity for the British players
on its books. Martin Weddell,
Bracknell Bees Chief Executive, said: "We are
looking forward to building a team for the FBNL. "We
have 150 players in total from
junior to senior level. Many develop through the ranks
but have to go to other clubs to get first team experience. Now
well be able to
give our players this opportunity, which is a great incentive
for them and also for our younger players coming through."
Martin said
supporters have also given the switch the thumbs up, as
it guarantees regular weekend fixtures throughout the
season, rather than the
ISLs mid-week matches, which are arranged on a monthly
basis. The move is to a bigger league - 10 clubs rather
than five - and offers
great opportunities to resume local rivalries with teams
in Basingstoke and Guildford. John said that keeping the
team in the ISL is too
costly and made the decision to change leagues after much
soul searching.
