Brian proves age isn't an issue

Brian Cam, a regular skater from John Nike Leisuresport, Bristol, has received a Lilly Outstanding Achievement and Recognition (OAR) Award.The presentation was made by five times Olympic gold medalist, Sir Steve Redgrave, on 14 November (World Diabetes Day) at the Houses of Parliament.
Brian, aged 71, was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 50. He took up skating at 65 and he has won 17 medals over the last seven years, including one for his interpretation of the Monster Mash (see left)! He regularly competes in Hot Ice dance competitions at John Nike Leisuresport, Bristol.
When he was diagnosed with diabetes, Brian viewed it as an opportunity to start adopting a healthier lifestyle - including giving up his 40-a-day smoking habit. He was given the award because he impressed the judges with his positive attitude to life.
Sir Steve Redgrave, who also has diabetes, said: "Since being diagnosed, Brian has embraced life with both hands and allowed nothing to stop him enjoying every minute of it. His story will serve to lift the spirits of anybody recently diagnosed with diabetes."
Terry Warne, Manager at Bristol, said: "Brian is a well-known and popular character at John Nike Leisuresport, Bristol. His skating routines are fantastic and to still be winning medals at his age is a real achievement. He thoroughly deserves the award.'

Students experience a life of leisure at the Coppid Beech

Six students from Bracknell and Wokingham were given a behind-the-scenes insight into the running of a four-star hotel last year, when
they spent two weeks at the Coppid Beech Hotel's 'Summer School'.
This new scheme proved so successful that it is being expanded this year to include The Swan at Streatley and John Nike Leisuresport, Bracknell. It is operated in conjunction with the Education Business Partnership - a company that provides a link between schools and businesses. It is hoped that the initiative will encourage more youngsters into the leisure industry.
Emma Smith (15), Owen Evans (15), Julia Webster (17), Saylee Valsangkar (17), Rebecca Wheeler (14) and Tom Dell (15) worked in reception, the kitchens, the leisure club and sales and marketing. At the end of the fortnight, each one shared their experiences in a presentation to their parents and the hotel's managers. They also received a Certificate of Achievement from the Hotel and a Food Hygiene certificate, which is endorsed by the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health.
Emma and Rebecca enjoyed their experience so much that they went back. Emma has a weekend job in the kitchens and Rebecca did more work experience in the sales department.

The Nike Group in brief

Nike Design (Wales) is working with Jacobs Gibb to carry out groundwater surveys on 3,500 buildings in Cardiff. It forms part of a larger project to survey 22,000 properties to see if they have suffered any ill effects as a result of a rise in groundwater levels after the construction of the Cardiff Bay Barrage - a dam which has created a permanent lake in Cardiff Bay.

Eight members of staff at John Nike Leisuresport, Llandudno, including both ski instructors and members of the managerial team, have attended a 12-week sign language course. The training will make skiing and snowboarding accessible to a wider range of communities in North Wales. There has already been a surge in advanced bookings from deaf and hearing impaired customers.
